Other | Are Kylie Lip Kits Actually Worth The Money?

The Kylie Lip Kits. I've spoken about them so many times now that I'm starting to get sick of talking about them. You all know by now how much I love them - well, with the exception of Kourt K of course. By are they actually worth it? Are they worth all of the hassle? All of the customs fees and shipping charges?

The Packaging
I could talk about the packaging but we all know what it is like by now. We know it is pretty and unique. We know the colour on the outerbox resembles the shade within the lip kit and it is all very nice. It is unlike any other brands packaging out there and it is instantly recognizable. Hell, even the box it arrives at your door in is recognizable, which is probably why they had to change it due to the theft of the boxes of peoples doorsteps. But enough about the packaging, let's talk about the good stuff.

The Price
Within each Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kit you receive one 3.25 ml tube of liquid lipstick as well as one 1 g lip liner which is the perfect accompaniment to the lipstick. Each lip kit costs $29 although you can buy each product individually with the liquid lipstick costing $17 and the lip liner costing $14 so it is actually cheaper to buy them as a set rather than individually. If we were to put this into ££ then it would be around £21.72 per lip kit or £12.73 for the lipstick and £10.49 for the liner. If we were to compare this to MAC for example, then the Kylie Lip Kit is a lot cheaper than if you were to go and buy a liner and lipstick from MAC.

The Product
Kylie is bringing out new and exciting lip kit shades every couple of weeks or so and at the moment, there are 16 different shades out there, although some are limited edition. I own 5 shades and I am in utter love with 4. In my experience, the tubes I have received have been filled right up to the top although I do know that some people have received empty bottles but I will talk about that more in depth down below in a different paragraph. The formula to the liquid lipsticks is rather thin without being watery but it still manages to be creamy in consistency. They are easy to apply and deeply pigmented so one swipe of colour is plenty to cover the entire lips. You can layer the lipstick up if you wanted to but I wouldn't advise it with Kourt K as it can flake a little, as well as feeling slightly uncomfortable which I haven't experienced with the other shades I own. The lipstick itself does have a strange, synthetically sweet scent to it which I personally do not like but I know others don't mind it. Fortunately it doesn't linger too long on the lips. The lipstick lasts quite literally all day long. I have worn Candy K for 10 hours and it is still in the same place in the evening as it was in the morning. You really cannot fault its longevity. They are also incredibly comfortable to wear considering they are a matte liquid lipstick and as a suffer of dry lips, I don't find that they show up dry areas of the lips which is remarkable. It is also worth noting that the lip liner is incredibly creamy and easy to apply as it doesn't pull or tug at the lips. It is definitely the creamiest lip liner I have owned.

The Shipping and The Customs Fees
I have found the shipping process to be rather quick and rather reasonable in price considering it is coming from overseas. The shipping costs $14.95 (which is £11.20) regardless of how many products you buy at once. For this I would recommend buying all of the products you wanted at the same time to make the price worth your while. The shipping is sent via the United States Postal Service which then goes to the Royal Mail in the UK. You get given a tracking number right from the beginning so you can keep tabs on your parcels whereabouts, although if it states it has been delivered when you haven't received it yet then it is because it has been sent to Royal Mail where you have to pay the customs fees. When the Kylie Lip Kits first came out, there was a 50/50 chance of having to pay a customs fees but now it is 99% certain that you will have to pay the charges. If you live in the UK, the customs charges are broken down like this - £4 per product plus an £8 Royal Mail handling fee which I think is very unkind. When you purchase a lip kit, you must take into consideration the customs charges which will increase the price of the product significantly. For one lip kit, the price would change from £21.72 to £33.72 and if you add in the shipping fee as well, it changes from £33.72 to £44.92. When you take everything into consideration, from the price for the lip kit, the customs charges and the shipping fee, £44.92 for one lipstick and liner is pretty expensive.

Dupes
Like most products out there, there is a dupe for everything. Even the dupe has a dupe! The Kylie Lip Kits are no exception. If you want a like for like dupe colourwise for the Candy K Lip Kit, then buy Colourpop's Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick in Bianca immediately. It is $6 (£4.49) and the colour is exctly the same. I own both and I literally cannot tell the difference. Here are some more dupes for a few of the other shades!

The Controversy
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Kylie Cosmetics, from the lipsticks down to unfulfiled orders. The Kylie Lip Kits have nearly the same ingredients in as the Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks which is strange but it was revealed that the company who produces Kylie Cosmetics also produces Colourpop. Whilst they have nearly the same ingredients, I do believe there is a difference in formula between the two with Colourpop being much thicker and creamier in formula whereas Kylie's are a lot thinner in consistency.

Finally, the customer service side of Kylie Cosmetics has really let them down. Considering how many orders they send out each day and the amount of customers they must have, it would seem customer service is pretty much non-existent with lost orders, orders arriving with no product inside the box, lip kits arriving with empty tubes, broken applicators.. I feel that Kylie Cosmetics weren't ready to become a massive brand so quickly and weren't prepared for the uptake and the customer service side that comes with selling things. If you have a complaint you want to be able to contact someone within that company to reassure you, not to send out an automated email in response. It was reported that each time Kylie launched a new product she made 1 million dollars which, without sounding bitchy, perhaps she should put that into customer service rather than new cars.

The Verdict
There is no doubting that the Kylie Lip Kits are now a cult, status product. The girl could bring out a bright yellow matte lipstick and people would still buy it. Just take her 4th of July limited edition lip kit in Skylie - it was bright sky blue for gods sake and it still sold out! Kylie is definitely onto a winner with her Lip Kits and now that she is branching out into eyeshadow palettes, cream eyeshadows, eyeliners and goodness knows what else she has up her sleeve, I think her cosmetic line will be around for a very long time. At first everyone bought her products because of the name associated to it but these products are good. More than good. They don't need the name associated to it to sell. Although it helps. The one thing Kylie needs to change the lack of customer service aspect to her company as it is really letting her down. If people have a bad experience with a company and there is no-one there to reply to their queries or if they do get a response, deny all responsibility, that customer will go elsewhere and I can't say I blame them.

So, are they worth it? Yes. I know they are very, very similar to the Colourpop liquid lipsticks but I believe Kylie's version is better. They're longer wearing, more comfortable to wear and they don't transfer at all. The Kylie Lip Kits last all day long and I literally cannot fault the product. What I can fault is the overall price when you take customs and shipping into consideration. I think it is only worthwhile buying Kylie Cosmetics products when you are ordering more than one product. It is not worth buying just one as no matter how many you buy, you will still pay the same shipping and customs handling fee. I'm not saying buy loads, just get your money's worth out of those shipping and customs fees because, lets face it, they may end up being the most expensive lip products you own!

  1. I wanted to try some of Kylie's stuff but only one product really so with shipping I feel like as you said it's really not worth it. It's such a shame though because everyone seems to be raving about her stuff (well, not everyone but you know what I mean).

  3. I would buy them if it wasn't so expensive to get them to the UK, it would be worth it if I was buying 4-5 but I can't afford that many so I am avoiding them! Lol, they do look amazing though :)

  7. It's all hype really isn't it? Mind you, what do I know? For a long time I was under the impression that this was a range by Kylie Minogue.
