Other // Is It Cheaper To Buy Make Up In America?

When I went to America I went armed with a long list of make up products that I was going to try and buy when I was out there. Not only was I aiming at buying make up that we can't get in the UK, but also make up that we can get here but because of the pound to dollar conversion, it should be cheaper, right?

Before I went to America I decided to look up the prices of the items that I wanted to buy whilst on holiday on UK websites as well as on US websites and the results were pretty surprising. Some of the items that you can only find limited stock of online in the UK, such as Anastasia Beverly Hills, turned out to be cheaper here than in the US where they originate from. I ended up looking up a bunch of popular beauty products on US and UK websites to see which were cheaper in which country and I think you will all be pretty surprised at what I found. But first, let's talk tax..

Tax // This is the first thing to remember when making any purchase in the USA. The price you see on the tag is not the final price. When you get to the till they add the tax on which is not only a pain when you think you have the right money, but it also obviously makes the product more expensive, meaning that deal you think you are getting isn't such a great deal after all. For example, I had planned to buy a new iPhone in America but if I added the tax into consideration then it would be more expensive than if I were to buy it at home. So if you want to buy an iPhone in America, just buy it in duty free instead!

UK vs US // The results! (£1 > $1.41. All US prices are including tax)
Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint / UK - £30 | US - $46.64 > £33.02 | Cheaper in the UK
Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit / UK - £39 | US - $48.71 > £34.48 | Cheaper in the US
Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector / UK - £32 | US - $46.59 > £32.98 | About even
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz / UK - £15.50 | US - $28.57 > £20.23 | Cheaper in the UK
Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Palette / UK - £59 | US - $65.72 > £46.53 | Cheaper in the US
Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow / UK - £15 | US - $25.39 > £17.98 | Cheaper in the UK
Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette / UK - £38.50 | US - $57.24 > £40.52 | Cheaper in the UK
Urban Decay Naked Concealer / UK - £17.50 | US - $30.04 >  £21.27 | Cheaper in the UK
Tarte Tartelette In Bloom Palette / UK - £33 | US - $54.01 > £38.24 | Cheaper in the UK
Real Techniques Core Collection / UK - £21.99 | US - $18.64 > £13.20 | Cheaper in the US

It is also worth noting that the tax varies in each state and that the conversion rates change each day so it is also best to check just before you make a purchase to see if you are actually getting a better deal or not. I know spending a few extra dollars here and there doesn't sound too bad but they all add up in the end!

Something that also surprised me when walking around a drugstore was that they now sell UK brands such as MUA and Makeup Revolution in America and goodness me, are they expensive. We are talking double/triple the price than the UK. Obviously us British people won't be travelling to America and buying MUA but if you are American and planning a trip to the UK, buy it here as it is a hell of a lot cheaper!

So, is it cheaper to buy make up in America?
I think the above is a rhetorical question. It is really hard to tell but from what I have found above, then it pays to do your research. If you are heading to the US and have a lengthy shopping list, have a google as you might just be surprised at the cost of things and lets not forget about that pesky tax...

  1. Wow this is amazing! I always remember thinking that it is cheaper to buy in the states than at home. I found what was cheaper was only when I went to those outlets , and they had makeup counters and stuff there, I got my Mac lipsticks for $11 (with tax inc) which definitely was cheaper! I think we sometimes forget that money abroad isn't play money! xx

  6. Wow being an American I never realized how expensive our makeup is and how much of a pain it is with our tax system. I guess when you are accustomed to that way of life you don't notice. I definitely want to visit the UK it seems way cheaper. Thanks for sharing love!

  8. Yes, but when you can buy Colourpop eyeshadow for $5 and they charge £9 in the UK, or Juvias Place eyeshadow palette for $20, but here on Beautybay it costs £30 you will be like: What?? Why should we pay double the price on what's so cheap in US?
