Personal // My Obsession With Hand Sanitizer

Bath and Body Works Hand Sanitizer - $1.75 each
This is quite a sore spot for me and one that everyone has a good laugh at at my expense but if I am being very truthful, I just can't help it.

I don't know where the obsession started, or what triggered it, but for the past couple of years I have not been able to touch a door handle in public. The thought of touching something that hundreds of other people could have touched makes me feel physically sick and sweaty just at the prospect. It is irrational, and it is starting to turn into a bit of a fear.

My family and friends think this is highly amusing and they sigh at me when I wait for someone to open the door for me. Obviously if I am on my own I have to pull that door myself. If I am wearing a coat or long sleeved top then I can cope but heaven forbid I am wearing a short sleeved t-shirt. Recently on Dragon's Den there was a man trying to sell a product which I thought could have been a great item for the general public but he was shot down and the dragons thought he was a bit of a joke. The product was a little card that you used to open doors with so not to touch the handle and get germs on you and the idea was for it to live in your purse or wallet. My argument about this is that then the germs would be in your purse and I don't like that idea but still, it is the thought that counts.

Whilst that idea might not be the newest product on the market just yet, my next port of call is hand sanitizer, and lots of it!! I get through hand sanitizer extremely quickly and I use it about 15 times a day. My favourites are from Bath and Body Works which, you sadly can't get in the UK. If you hadn't head of Bath and Body Works then it is essentially a store solely selling body products, candles, perfumes etc. It is an American brand so you either have to hop on a plane to the USA to reach them or get a pal to go for you.

With a little bit of OCD, I walked into Bath and Body Works in Washington DC earlier this year with cash in my hand and an empty basket waiting to be filled up. I headed straight for the hand sanitizer section and happily stood and smelt every single one. And there were a lot. They sell a wonderful variety of fragrances all available in various forms which luckily, reach the hand sanitizer section. I'm talking Pineapple Sorbet, Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte, Orchard Bloom, Sweet Peach Tea, Watermelon Picnic, Electric Mango...

For $1.75 you get a cute little pocket sized bottle of product which is 29 ML. You can also buy a full sized version for $5 and you get a massive 225 ML of product. I think the reason why the little bottle is more popular is because you can easily carry it around with you whereas do you really want to walk around with a 225 ML bottle in your bag?

Obviously you don't have to go to America to get decent hand sanitizer. Have a little peek at the hand sanitizer's you can get in the UK much easier below.
When I talk to people about my inability to touch doors (that sounds weird), some people agree with me and some just laugh. My question to you is this, when did you last see someone clean a door handle? Other items I don't like touching include: the first item seen on the shelf (always get the one behind), shopping trolleys, remote controls, light switches, anything remotely communal in a restaurant and doorbells. Now, where is my hand sanitizer?

  2. I got a tonne of the bath and body works one's before I left Canada because they don't sell them here. I love them so much. I actually wrote a blog post on them too! I like how they actually smell good unlike most hand sanitisers. I'm a bit of a germaphobe so I always have one in my bag with me.
