Other // How Old Is Your Make-Up?

Whilst rifling through my everyday make-up bag for a certain lipstick, I pulled out something very small and sharp. "What is that?" I thought to myself, pulling it out to have a good old nose at it. It was my very well used Rimmel Kohl Pencil that I used in Secondary School. I left school 4 years ago. That kohl pencil had been sat at the bottom of my make-up bags for at least 4 years. 4 years! I haven't seen it since, which goes to show how much make-up I seem to hoard. I then decided to tip out the whole contents of my make-up bag onto my bed, and the massive box containing make-up which I use to balance even more make-up on top of, to have a good old clear out.

Whilst going through everything, a realisation came to me. I have had some of this stuff for years. Years. We're talking longer than 4 years, which is pretty remarkable considering these things should be thrown away once opened after a few months or so. To say I was horrified was a bit of an understatement. Why has it taken me this long to go through everything? Why am I so attached to my make-up? Using a website called CheckCosmetic.net I took a brave step and decided to see how old my make-up was. The results ain't pretty.

I haven't told anyone this, and it is quite embarrassing typing it but one of my products was (gulp) manufactured in 2006. Believe it or not, 2006 was 8 years ago!! I'm not saying that I bought it and opened it in 2006, one cannot remember the precise date that this was purchased but with all of my products, I imagine I bought them give or take a few months to a year within being manufactured.

Lancôme Color Design Eyeshadow / Date of Manufacture: 20th of March, 2006.
(I actually remember buying this, and another Lancôme product, in a little shop in a designer outlet. At the time I wasn't particularly into make-up so didn't pay attention to what I was buying and looking back I kind of think "why did I buy that?" This was so long ago that that little shop isn't there anymore!)

I am a bit of a hoarder, it would seem! Some of these products I know for a fact that have well and truly gone beyond the expiry date once opened and should be thrown away as soon as possible. Some times we get taken in by make-up and forget all about the implications that may affect us if we use them once they are past their expiration dates. Of course, they won't kill us but if you have an eye infection whilst using a certain mascara then throw that mascara into your make-up bag, forget about it then start using it months down the line, you could possible risk getting that infection again.

I know it's hard, girls, but if you can't remember the last time you used a product then it is probably best just to throw it out. I picked up one of my foundations the other day and couldn't remember the last time I used it so I (gut-wrenchingly) threw it away, purely because heaven knows how long that has been sitting in my bedroom!

The moral of the story is, check your dates. You don't need 10 year old make up taking up valuable space in your bedroom. Throw out your old make-up. Think of all the space you will have for all of your new lipsticks!
